Our back yard is a south-west facing area approximately 34'x43' in area. It gets a lot of sunlight and heat especially in summer. The space is dominated by a live oak tree. This tree keeps its leaves all year and then dumps them in spring when new growth comes in.
1.The tree has shut out the light and grass will not grow underneath. See photo Yard1. The ground is muddy in wet weather. The tree roots have tilted a concrete slab upwards and have caused the wall surrounding the garden to tilt slightly outwards Yard2. The roots can be seen in picture Yard3. Over the last 10 years the tree has claimed the sky above the yard and it in now much more tolerable to sit outside in summer.
2.The floor of the back porch will have to be rebuilt. This is a perfect time to look at the third problem.
3.My wife calls the monumental steps immensely ugly. She wants them gone and replaced with a circular stair to the back porch. Photo Yard4
4.The steps leading to the basement door are an eyesore that need a solution.
5.Rain drainage from the main and porch roofs. See photo Yard5 The drainage pipe has been clogged since we had the house and all that water overflows into the yard.
6.Rough existing plans with dimensions are supplied also.
1.We want to turn this area into a livable space.
2.We want to maximize the shade from the tree.
3.We want the area to be low maintenance.
4.We see the use of planters to get plant color into the space.
5.The live oak tree will have to be given space to grow.
6.We expect that this project will be completed by end of April 2012.
1.Any plan will have to be approved by the City of Charleston BAR. http://www.charleston-sc.gov/dept/content.aspx?nid=491&cid=655
2.Changing the house color is impractical.
1.Cost, ease of maintenance and flexibility of space use.
1.Complete package suitable to send out for bids.
