I have a rather small nice backyard, but it needs more hardscape, and more areas for outdoor living. It is nice but kind of boring. The sun rises in the summer in the back right corner and sets in the summer in the back left side(house back faces mostly north, but a bit east). I live in Lincoln, Ca and that is near Sacrameto, Ca. It is very hot in the summer and need plants that can be fine on a drip system and tolerate the mostly sunny yard. I would like to have maybe a deck in one corner of the yard with perhaps a water feature, but the summer sun shines on the back right corner in the evening and the opposite side has the morning sun, and is a bit smaller area, so not sure which corner would be best. I would like to conceal my garbage cans and also add a small area for storage of yard tools and lawn mower. The retaining wall is fairly large part of the yard. The roses are too close to the wall and that leaves too much space behind the roses that is wasted space. I thought if remove the roses and maybe plant other shrubs that didn't need a lot of attenton(like pruning) and then perhaps in front of them I could grow some vegtables?? I like the idea of putting things on the fence, either old photo frames that I have alot of, or perhps boxes with plants or even silk fake plants. I have a desire to maybe have a fireplce and small kitchen area at the end of the patio or even in the center of the patio, but still need to be able to get thru to the side yards to access the front yard.
The left side of the house needs a walkway, a gate, and plants in smaller planter against the house and then along the concrete wall another planter with some sort of shade for that side of the house. There are 5 windows that look out on that side of the house and the morning into early afternoon the sun just beats on that side of the house. There are a few trees, but we don't care to keep them. Maybe a row of crepe mrytles, or something else that is not going to undermine the wall or house with it's roots, not too big, and not too messy(althought crepe mrytals are kind of messy, but really pretty). On the side of the concrete wall, could hang a pieces of art outside the dinning room, kitchen or family room windows??
Paito and cover stays and it is difficult to move the retainer wall back for more yard, so I thought we could use the raised part for more yard. One layer of the retaining wall isn't necesary so we will be taking it off to use in the front yard. On both sides of the retainer wall there is the ability to put a few steps up and into the retainer area(kind of tight on the side where the garbage cans are). Could even put a walkway from the patio up to the retainer wall with steps up and into the retianer wall area from the center of the patio. ??put a small putting green in the center of the retianer wall?? Water feature and maybe even a fire pit(if no fireplace)?? A fireplace on the end of the patio that isn't too big with built in gas barbecue beside it?? Need a TV near the table so we can spend more time out there. Maybe incorporate TV over the fireplace?? The block wall on the right side o9f the yard is not very tall, and it steps down as it goes into the front yard, but maybe a screen on top of the wall?? Not sure we can put it on top of the wall per county, so perhaps posts that go above the wall and have screen on it above the wall and have it up against the wall?? Everything will be on drip, and want low maintenance plants. Would like color and also shapes in the landscaping, be it plants or other features.
I would like it to be fairly affordable that is why I would like the make over to use the raised part of the retainer wall. I like the shrubs to not out grow the space and not need alot of constant care, that don't make a mess and minimum pruning. Privacy isn't a big issue, but need some hieght in the back planter area thru trees or shrubs that will not hav a root problem. The fence in the back is going to have to be replaced soon, it is starting to lean. So maybe the privacy issue will be taken care of then, not sure how high the fence can go in our area.
