This purpose of this project is to transform the current front and back yard into a water wise and visually appealing space that includes:
1. California friendly water wise plants
2. Spaces to socialize and relax
3. Kids play/exploration area
4. Raised bed garden and fruit trees
This project will be completed over several phases. The project budget is $15,000. Each phase should will have a budget of approx. $5 thousand. This project will likely by a DIY so demo and planting details/instructions would be helpful.
Phase I- removal of turf/grass and installation of main California friendly plants, installation of fence along back side of back yard, and moving fence gates toward the front of the house.
Phase II- Add children development/play space (children are 1(boy) and 4 (girl). Add additional plants for privacy/color etc. Add raised garden beds and fruit trees.
Phase III- Reduce the patio space or re-purpose/re-shape as an outdoor living/social space.
Currently, the exposed back yard space is approx. 30 feet deep by 80 feet wide. The land is flat, partially covered in grass (i believe its crab grass) with no trees or other plants. I would like the design to include raised garden beds, an area for children to explore and play, and one or two social spaces. The back yard space also includes approx 1300 sq ft of patio space. I'm open to complete removal, reshaping, or just reorganizing. I'm looking for best-use-of-space solution. Note: Approx. 400 sqft of the patio will be taken up by a future room addition.
Back yard measurements:
Area covered in grass: 82ft wide x 31 ft deep (from patio to back fence)
Concrete patio- Approx 80 ft wide with various depths as the house is not linear in the rear. area behind the garage is approx 12 ft deep while the remainder is approx 18ft deep. The space behind the garage is slated for a future room addition. That addition will take up most of the current concrete footprint (appox 20 x 12).
I would like to replace the chain link fence along the back of the property to add privacy.
For the front yard, I envision a simple design with a water wise and colorful landscape. I'd also like to utilize some of the space to grow more food such as citrus.
Front yard measurements:
Main-58ft wide by 17ft deep
Left side- 8ft x 27ft
Right side- 8ft x 27ft covered in concrete
Parkway- 58ft wide x 5 ft deep
Mulched area #1 in front of house (between the house and walkway) is approx 22'5 x 3' 5
mulched area #2 in front of house is approx 22'5 x 3'
We love to have a lot of color, variety, and privacy. I believe the climate zone is 10a. Approximately 60-70% of the yard has full sun exposure.
Another consideration in the design should be the fruit and nut trees that I have in pots. Currently, I have two Fig, two Cherry, one Almond, one Blueberry bush, one Mulberry, one Avocado. I will likely add orange, lemon, lime, peach, and apple. I plan on keeping these trees pruned to about 6ft. Another idea that I would like to explore to save space is to espalier these and/or future trees along a fence and/or wall.
Moving the fence gates from the back side of the house to the front side of the house so the side yards can be used for planting etc.
