We have a split level house that we have been renovating over time to be the home we live in and raise our family in. My husband is a contractor and I am a busy, working mom who travels a lot for work. We have two daughters - 3 & 5 who are my helpers and as with any family - always migrate to the kitchen. We are the "hub" of the wheel for our very large group of friends & their children. We put in a custom pool last year (photos are included), and we tend to be the weekend hangout - sun up to sun down and sometimes for hours after that :) I love to cook - my favorite thing to do on a Sunday is to try out new recipes, make meals & entertain friends and family.
I currently have 1 small cabinet for plates & and very small cabinet for a few glasses. Otherwise, the space is extremely limited - and we have things shoved and stored all throughout the kitchen - and other areas of the house to compensate for lack of space in the kitchen.
There is currently an area for an eat-in kitchen -which I don't mind, but I'm leaning toward an island where the "daily" meals could be. The top of our table is worn, scratched and ruined from having 2 small kids. I thought the granite of an island would be more durable?
We have a dining room area off the kitchen that is pretty, and we use about 1-2 times a year. Formal dining rooms are great for resale, however, I could be convinced to possibly give it up in lieu of more space & storage. Also, off the dining room is a sunken smaller living room/sitting room with a fireplace. This room is the geographic center of the household and the doors off the room open to our back patio and pool that we installed last year. It is the most commonly used back door entrance to that entertaining area. I had also toyed with the idea of using that living room space and converting it to a more casual sitting room/breakfast nook or even possibly the dining room.
Obviously, we need help. We're open to a lot of ideas. We want something that will wow us & our guests. Chef friendly; kid & family friendly (as they grow) and as comfy as can be for wine or coffee with friends and weekend guests.
Our style: traditional, classy but sleek with a few hints or touches of modern. Not status quo, but not too "out there".
Storage & Maximization of Space
Love to cook
Want the biggest refrigerator possible - since we don't have space for an outdoor or extra one
Lots of entertaining
I am 5'1" - my husband is 6'2"
Like the idea of drawers for every day plates etc & tupperware etc
I like clean, picked up looks: hide coffee makers & toasters/blenders behind a cabinet - out for easy access, but not "out & visible" on the counter to clutter it up.
pull out spice racks for easy access
Good lighting - like dim lighting and accent lighting for evenings after dinner
Open to sky lights or other options to allow for good natural light
TV in kitchen - lots of events (football games) etc where people are in kitchen too
Like tile in kitchen on floor - with dark grout that hides dirt and crumbs for easier maintenance.
Most storage & space created while keeping good flow
Maximizing of $ & spend
Stunning - but not trendy - the concept needs to be somewhat timeless
