On sheet A1, the floor plan is shown at ½” scale. I have keyed every piece of furniture with a number which corresponds to text to the right. This will guide you in purchasing or using existing furniture by referencing to the measurements indicated here. On the floor plan you’ll see over the bed a notation with A,B,C with arrows pointing in the direction of respective elevations.
I wanted to create a cozy, uncluttered living space for your dad which is why I have chosen a traditional clean cut design for him, using light furniture and natural colors. You’ll see item number 6 (dresser) will have a swivel monitor stand (monitor turntable) to place the existing 31” flat screen on top of it. This swivel stand will provide your father with the flexibly to watch TV from the living area or form his bed. The 5 foot couch has been located by the widow making a good reading space as it takes advantage of the good lighting with a small coffee table to the side (I don’t show an ottoman but there is enough space for one if preferred and it can also be used as a coffee table). Item number 14 is a coat rack bench. This is a great piece of furniture which he can use for his coats and below for his shoes. You can always modify this piece by placing bins below to store other belongings. I’m not sure if you have any homegoods, TJmax, Marshalls or Ikea by you but if you do, it’s worth taking a look. I’m a big fan of Restoration Hardware furniture because its great quality and beautiful but their prices are high. Homegoods receives a lot of overstocked items from Restoration Hardware and the price is unbelievable. At the same time, the other places have unique pieces that are rare finds.
A2 Story board shows all pieces of furniture used in your dad’s room with a key plan for convenience. Showing original oak floors with a durable chunky hand-braided jute rug in a silver/green to tie both living area and bedroom area. Full size bed in metal/fabric with antique pine night table and armoire. Night table can be open below as shown or full drawers for undergarments and pajamas. It will all depend how much storage he will need. The armoire has hanging with a shelf above and drawers below for shirts, shorts etc. The dresser I chose an antique black with more detail but still very clean and traditional looking. By the game table you’ll also see a metal/wood wall mounted shelf for books or any items he’d like to be displayed.
On Elevations A, B and C also have a key plan for your convenience with notation A, B or C with arrows pointing in the direction of respective elevation shown. On sheet A3 (elevation A) you’ll see the bed with the dresser and TV shaded in. I did this so that you can get a feeling of what it would look like if you were sitting on the couch looking towards the bed area. 12 foot ceilings are high, which is why I have dressed the bed area with staggered frames. Again, you can find some great frames at homegoods, TJ Max and marshalls. This elevations also shows the coat rack bench side profile (open below with hooks above) with frames on the bath wall (can be family photos or paintings). On sheet A4 (elevation B) I’m using 9 frames that create a map of the world over the couch. Ikea has some images broken up into frames that are also very nice. I’ve decided last minute to add another floor lamp to accommodate the couch and table. Sheet A5 (elevation C) I have treated the window with a linen relaxed roman shade. Since you have the 6” shelf that projects into the room and just below the window, I have added a wood shelf with same projection (this will avoid anyone hitting it by mistake) to display photos or small items he’d like to display. Just to the side on the upper part of the wall, I’ve added an oversized clock in a time worn patina to dress up the high ceiling. This elevation also shown how the living area and bedroom area tie in together.
Last but not least there is a AL sheet (alternative floor plans). This was showing two simplified layouts with a recliner and one with the option of having a privacy curtain. The don’t need to look institutional, a sheer curtain is just enough to give it a little filter for when he’s playing cards with friends. This sheet is not to confuse you but to give you a feeling of some other options.
I hope you like my suggestions and wish you and your dad the best of luck.
